THIRD ISSUE

Two Greek artists are presenting their work in Venice, at the San Nicolo Art Gallery(1), in an exhibition organized by the Consulate of Greece in Venice. The artists are Effie Halivopoulou and Andreas Voussouras, both members of a team of nearly 20 young artists. This team of artists, during the past few years, have been cooperating in group exhibitions organized and curated by art critic Bia Papadopoulou. Mrs. Papadopoulou has also written the preface for the exhibition catalog.

The title of this exhibition, "Engrams of Oblivion", and the convergance point of the two artists is the nature of their themes:

Effie Halivopoulou works on the two-fold meaning of archive —both biological and digital—, trying to trace the borders between collective and personal memory, tending to approach one of the biggest questions of our time: the interface between artificial and human intelligence.

Andreas Voussouras is working with "memory materials" on the notion of time and its relationship with human memory: he creates spaces, installations and environments with images of images, both through photos and through objects.

Mnemosyne(2) of the ancient Greek pantheon is travelling to Venice without her archaic tunic, to retrace the relation between archives and nerves, the relationship between time that tames evertything and memory, between written word and image, between the real and the virtual.

  2. Mnemosyne is referenced in Greek mythology as a Titaness, daughter of Uranus (Heaven) and Gaia (Earth).
She mated with Zeus for nine nights and she gave birth to the nine Muses. She was one of the few mortals deificated by Zeus. Her name became a synonym of memory and rememberance.
