The period of limitation of vision, 1980-1990

During this period, N. Hatzikyriakos-Ghikas gradually looses his vision. This fact is affecting the sharpness of his drawings -which became gradually more free but also uncertain- as well as his brush color gamut which is even more tending to pale and low tones. The usual themes are the same as those of this previous period's works, mostly landscapes (many of them from England, where he used to live for long periods) and internals (mostly his studio in London).

What characterizes the whole work of N. Hatzikyriakos-Ghikas is a steady and very personal mental and pictorial identity, within the frame of a unique consistency and evolutionary coherence. In his whole painting career, one element is more than prominent: the rendition of light and the research of its various forms.

On the one hand, his mental and artistic restiveness pushed him to make continuous indagations and researches, providing him with a secure theoretical basis, and on the other hand, his also great technical abilities, allowed him to give, in a unique way, the themes of his multifaceted inspiration.

These features always fed N. Hatzikyriakos-Ghikas inspiration and refreshed his creativity, until the end of his long life. These exact features set him as the top Greek painter of the 20th century, next to Konstantinos Parthenis, who has dominated with his work the Greek scene in the first half of the century.

N. Hatzikyriakos-Ghikas dominated the second half, exceeding Parthenis, because he became well-known sooner within the international artistic scene.
