Jannis Kounellis

1936 Born in Piraeus, Greece.
1956 Moved to Rome where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. Today the artist lives and works mostly in Rome. Currently teaches at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dusseldorf.
1960 First one-man exhibition in Rome (Galleria La Tartaruga).
1960-1984 Participated in several group exhibitions and presented a great number of one-man exhibitions (Galleria L' Attico, Milan; Galerie Iolas, Paris; Sonnabend Gallery, New York; Galleria Lucio Amelio, Naples; Galerie Folker Skulima, Berlin; Jean Bernier Gallery, Athens; Galerie Konrad Fischer, Dusseldorf; Galleria Christian Stein, Milan & Turin; Anthony d' Offay Gallery, London; Galerie Lelong, Paris & Zurich).
1977 First one - man exhibition in Greece (Jean & Karen Bernier Gallery)..
1985 Exhibition in a wool warehouse at Bordeaux (CAPC / Musee d'art contemporain).
1986 Retrospective exhibition in Chicago (Museum of Contemporary Art).
1988 Exhibition in Turin (Castello de Rivoli).
1989 Exhibition in Barcelona (Espai Problenou).
1991 Retrospective exhibition in Moscow (Casa Centrale degli Artisti, Nuova Tretjakov).
1993 Exhibition "Esposizione di paesaggi invernali" in Pistoia (Palazzo Fabroni).
1994 The J. F. Costopoulos Foundation organises the first retrospective exhibition of the artist in Greece (cargo vessel IONION, Piraeus).
1995 Exhibition in Bologna (Galleria d'Arte Moderna "La Salara").
1996-1997 Retrospective exhibition in Madrid (Centro de Arte Reina Sofia).
1997 Exhibition in Cologne (Museum Ludwig - Kelk).
