Christos Capralos

1909

Born at Panaitolio (Moustafouli), Agrinio.

1929-34

Studies painting at the School of Fine Arts, Athens, under Oumvertos Argyros

1934-40

Studies sculpture in Paris, at the Grande Chaumiere and Colsrossi Academies. In 1940, returns to Greece.

1940-46

Lives at his village and works in series Reliefs with scenes from everyday life, the war and the Occupation.

1951

Moves to Athens. In the summer, next to the painter T. Kalmouchos, discovers the island of Aegina.

1952-56

Works in Aegina during the summers. Reworks the reliefs of 1940-45 in limestone, on a large scale, to produce the Pindos Monument. Also works in pottery and with stones from the sea.

1957

Exhibits sculptures and reliefs in the hall of the Athens & Piraeus Electricity Company.

1962

Represents Greece at the Venice Biennale.

1963-73

Represents Greece at the United States — Martha Jackson and Park Galleries (1963). Cincinnati Art Museum (1967) –and Canada (Albert White Galleries). Participates in group exhibitions in Germany, Italy and the USA.

1970

Transfers on to wood figures from the friezes at Olympia.

1972

Personal exhibition at the Hilton Gallery, Athens.

1973-74

Works on the monumental wooden group The Crucifixion.

1975

Participates in the Sao Paolo Biennale

1991

The Christos and Souli Capralos Foundation is created.

1993

He died on 20th January in Athens.
